Brookfields Back Block Syrah

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Some say Syrah, some say shiraz - it's all the same, folks, and here's a great value one out of Hawkes Bay. It's a spicy, more medium-bodied number that shows lots of pepper on the nose, along with some dark plums, a whisper of deli-meats, and blackberries. The palate is quite elegant, with those pepper spices and deep plummy flavours punching thorough, a smoothness to the tannins, and that spice showing up again on the finish.

Winemaker's Notes

The Back Block is located at Ohiti Estate. While back block is a generic term – many people live in the back blocks (isolated hill country), and every farm has a back block. The Back Block at Ohiti is exactly that, and is literally at the back, surrounded by hills on a shingle free draining base, facing the north east, thus ideal for growing grapes.

Appearance: Rich magenta hues.

Palate: Pepper is surrounded by plum in an ocean of subtle spice and oak. This leads to a full rich mid palate explosion with a long lingering finish. Patience in the vineyard and equally with barrel maturation is the key to the Back Block Syrah.

Food: Duck with orange sauce.

Cellaring: Up to ten years.

Alcohol: 13.5%

Grown in Hawke's Bay, the 2010 vintage barrel-aged for eight months, is full-coloured, mouthfilling, fresh and vibrantly fruity, with plum and black-pepper flavours, spicy, slightly nutty and well-rounded. Drink now or cellar.

Grown at Ohiti Estate, in Hawke's Bay, the 2007 vintage was oak-aged for 18 months. Deep and youthful in colour, it's fresh and vibrantly fruity, with plum and spice flavours showing very good depth, a light seasoning of oak and gentle tannins. Drink now or cellar.
