Brookland Valley Verse 1 Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Not only is Brookland Valley a James Halliday five star winery when it comes to quality but they also know how to pull out the stops when it comes to delivering an excellent estate wine that is the essence of the Margaret River. Shiraz might not be the mainstay grape of the region but it should based on this evidence. Black cherry, spice and pepper flood the nose before a fruit-driven palate with soft tannins and soft acids ensure it will drink really well as a young wine.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep crimson red with purple hues, this wine displays wonderful black cherry, blackberry and pomegranate fruit aromas intertwined with exotic spice and white pepper. It reveals a juicy, fruit driven palate that lingers against a soft acid and refined tannin backbone. This wine will further develop in the bottle for up to five years.

Ray Jordan (2011 Vintage) says
This was a terrific vintage for reds in Margaret RIver and it shows in this modesty priced shiraz that punches way above its weight. Savoury earthy dark plum and black currant flavours with fine tannins and fine grained oak. It’s so smooth and velvety smooth yet so rich. Makes a real impact.

James Halliday (2011 Vintage) says
Deep crimson, bright; lifted and fragrant and vibrant, full of luscious fruits on entry, and then the firm, ripe tannins lead to a surprisingly long, savoury and even finish.

Australian Wine Companion 2014 Edition
Jeremy Oliver (2011 Vintage) says
Flavoursome, uncomplicated and early-drinking, with a spicy, peppery bouquet of redcurrants, raspberries, blackberries and briar backed by a herbal note of tomato stalk. Juicy and upfront, its soft, lightly oaked palate of vibrant small berries and plums reveals undertones of mint, musk and menthol, finishing with fresh acids and supple tannins.

Whoa! Here's a meaty barrel ferment style, very modern and swanky with a real international twist - clever winemaking indeed. Lots of wood and some berries below deck, supple tannins and fine spice notes. Bright berry flavour and silty tannins drift through the finish.
The Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2010 2009
James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Dense crimson; an expressive and complex bouquet of plum, spice and blackberry leads into a luscious palate, redolent of black fruits; oak and tannins in balance. Gold medal National Wine Show '08.
Australian Wine Companion 2010 2009
Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2007 Vintage) says
This deserves its rating for its beautiful mid-palate flavours - you take a gulp and it's full of vibrant, perfectly ripened cherries and plums and kirsch. It would have been given an even higher rating but for the finish: it's not short, but the flavours trail off more quickly than you'd expect. We're being picky, because we like to be. It'll be interesting to see how it ages. We're betting that you'll be able to find this at a discount price, and then it will be excellent buying. We came close to raving about this.
The Big Red Wine Book 2009/10 2009

Terrific value for money shiraz here. This shows plenty of lush savoury plum aromas and a lush soft and deliciously generous palate. This is a simple drink now wine that would be ideal for barbecues
Ray Jordan's 2004 WA Wine Guide 2004
James Halliday (2001 Vintage) says
Bright purple-red; ripe black cherry, blackberry and plum with a twist of vanillin oak on the bouquet; good depth to the varietal fruit of the palate, which is replete with fine, ripe tannins.
Australian Wine Companion 2004 2003
James Halliday (2000 Vintage) says
Very bright purple-red; the youthful, fresh fruit and charry oak of the bouquet are yet to integrate; the palate is firm and youthful, once again with the parts still coming together. Should settle down with more time.
