Browns of Padthaway The Brigstock Cabernet Shiraz Malbec

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Browns of Padthaway have been in the Padthaway region for over forty years, but it was not until the mid 9os that they decided to make wine. We are glad they did else we could have missed out on this Shiraz Cabernet that is distinctively regional. This is brimming with cedar, plum and chocolate before a structured palate of tannin and acids hold it all together. Plum and blackcurrant convey the essence of Cabernet while fine-grained oak lends elements of vanilla and cedar. Shiraz adds generosity making this a perfect wine for roast beef.

Winemaker's Notes

The ’02 Brigstock is deep red colour, with an inky, formic nose at first glance, coming from the Shiraz; plus notes of dried herbs (from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec); then some chocolate (from those expensive French oak barrels in which it slept for many months); plus a hint of leather (from bottle age). This is a lovely amalgam of fruit and winemaking influences, and touches of bottle maturation. It is genuinely complex in that many aromas are present, and all are in balance.

The palate is dense but well-structured; a core of fresh acidity from the cool season sets the tone. While it is approaching mid-life there is not a hint of crisis, largely due to that acidity, but also its fruit-derived tight, dry tannins.

The Brigstock will go at least another 5 years from now (this note written in 2009), and is delightful with Moroccan lamb fillets, a venison pie with roast onions and potato mash; or if you are feeling adventurous in the kitchen, a roast duck.

Browns of Padthaway Wine Reviews & Accolades

"Blackberry and blackcurrant pastille, mint and gamey old tobacco and cedar smells. In the mouth medium to full bodied and still looking pretty fresh for a seven year old wine - full of bright slightly jammy red fruit mixing with a little prune and more savoury tobacco bottle age characters laid out on cedar wood. Firm but fine tannins provide grip and there’s a decent savoury finish. It’s a good wine…and one that will last for a fair few years…" 90 Points. Gary Walsh, Wine Front - February 2009

James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
A ripe and powerful wine, with the malbec component helping considerably; generous and round in the mouth.
