James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Australian Wine Companion 2012 2011
James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
Carries its alcohol with aplomb; medium- to full-bodied traditional Barossa Valley style, its blackberry and mocha flavours have exemplary mouthfeel and structure; cork permitting, will be long lived.
Australian Wine Companion 2009 2008
Jeremy Oliver (2006 Vintage) says
Handsome, dark-fruited and deeply layered, this classic Barossa shiraz delivers a profoundly smooth and concentrated presence of plums, berries, blackcurrants and very well handled creamy cedar/chocolate oak. Backed by smoky, charcuterie-like complexity, it opens up wonderfully, with opulent fruit and oak tightly knit with velvet-fine tannin. Its balance would be marginally improved if its alcohol was fractionally less intrusive, but who cares? It's delicious.
Australian Wine Annual 2010 2009
Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2006 Vintage) says
This is a wine with a big reputation, and, considering that, it's remarkable that it has kept such a sensible price. This needs a few years' sleep in a cool, dark place. It's a pure, ripe, warm-flavoured shiraz with dense blackberry, coal and earthen flavours. It's a bit too warm and spirity to be enjoyed as a young wine, but it has the stuffing, balance and intent to mature.
The Big Red Wine Book 2009/10 2009
James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
A very attractive medium-bodied wine with plum, blackberry and black cherry fruit; good length, restrained alcohol and fine tannins.
Australian Wine Companion 2008 2007
James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
Bright purple-red, moderately deep; much more restrained and elegant than most prior releases; sweet (not dead or jammy) blackberry and raspberry fruit; very good oak and tannins.
Australian Wine Companion 2007 2006
Jeremy Oliver (2004 Vintage) says
A classic Australian burgundy style whose exotically spicy and leathery aromas of deep red and black berries, plums and cranberries are laced with musk and pepper. Its powerful core of deep, sumptuous black and red berry flavour effortlessly handles its restrained oak, while it finishes with rare intensity and mouthwatering acids. Tightly framed by velvet tannins that reveal a fine bony edge It's exceptionally elegant and already, quite complex. Beneath its lingering fruit lie rustic nuances of mint, menthol and sweet leather.

Gamey, licoricey, blackberried and powerful

James Halliday (2003 Vintage) says
Powerful and complex; black fruits, blackberries; ripe, lingering tannins, good oak; 10% Grenache.

Deep, complex and generous
The Big Red Wine Book 2009/10 2009
James Halliday (2001 Vintage) says
Medium to full red-purple; ripe, stewed plum, spice and prune aromas are followed by a very rich, ultra-ripe palate, replete with ripe tannins but subtle oak; USA here we come. As ever, 14.5° alcohol.
Australian Wine Companion 2004 2003
Jeremy Oliver (2001 Vintage) says
A ripe and meaty, but finely crafted Barossa shiraz of surprising elegance and tightness. Its complex smoky, earthy and spicy aromas of dark plums, cassis and red cherries are matched by vanilla and chocolate oak, while the soft, creamy palate of very lightly cooked plum/prune flavours is accentuated by hints of meat and animal hide, tar and spicy, herbal influences. A slight hotness is its only detraction.

Intense but balanced
The Big Red Wine Book 2009/10 2009
James Halliday (2000 Vintage) says
Medium to full red-purple; typical, super-ripe cherry, plum and prune fruit, then a palate flooded with sweet, ripe fruit; despite its 14.5°, not obviously alcoholic, nor hot or extractive.
