Gippsland Pinot like this is comparable with some of France’s finest and that’s what the guys behind Caledonia Australis believe. Started in the mid-90s, the idea was to create Burgundy style wines and what better grapes to do it with than Pinot Noir- the holy grail of Burgundian grapes. Perfumed with cherry and strawberry with notes of rhubarb and spice and a savoury forest floor aspect with subtle oak. There’s a vibrant palate with soft tannin weight, a well-rounded mouthfeel and good natural acidity that would pair well with Asian-spiced porkbelly.

Winemaker's Notes

Appearance: Rich and bright cherry-ruby colour with a deep cherry hue.

Nose: Ripe cherry and rhubarb aromas marry seamlessly with sweet biscuit-like vanilla French oak overlaying a long low note of forest floor and under growth. Reflecting the quality of the extraordinary 2009 season, the nose is rich and intoxicating.

Palate: Tightly wound at first the palate has crisp (just picked) fruit acidity, balanced alcohol, round supple tannins which are ethereal and compelling. Our best effort yet.

Light to medium red-purple, bright and clear; whole berry (destemmed) fruit was cold-soaked for 7 days, then wild yeast fermented for 2 weeks. The approach worked well, as the wine ahs very attractive plum, cherry and spice fruit that is 100% ripe; the palate is long and well balanced.
