Cape Barren Wines Old Vine Shiraz

Cracka Review

Inky crimson red in colour, the intense plum and prune aromas are framed by complex notes of toasty French oak, lavender and five-spice. Full-bodied and richly textured on the palate, the 2007 Old Vine Shiraz provides densely packed black fruits in the company of star anise and mocha. The persistent finish is supported by a subtle oak accent and soft, supple tannins.

Ideally suited to flavoursome game dishes such as rack of venison with porcini and soft polenta.

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
The vines in question are 70 years old, a year or so younger than I; the colour is excellent, and the moment you smell the bouquet you know this is going to be a very classy wine, the medium-bodied palate with dark berry fruits perfectly matched by fine, ripe tannins and integrated oak.

James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
Super-powerful McLaren Vale shiraz, with dense and ripe (but not jammy) black fruits on the rich palate; very good tannin and oak management; Gold medal, National Wine Show '07.

James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
Deep purple-red; blackberry, plum and bitter chocolate; good control of oak and extract; has balance to go with the abundant fruit flavour

Good colour; rich, ripe blackberry, plum, prune and chocolate flavours; controlled oak, firm tannins.

James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
Archetypal McLaren Vale style; lashings of dark chocolate wrapped around a core of blackberry fruit; 15 months in French and American oak barely shows.
