Expert Reviews

Jeremy Oliver (2011 Vintage) says
Very focused and classy - an exceptional example of its style. Spicy, floral and coriander-like aromas of grapefruit, melon, smoked meats and dried herbs reveal a hint of nettle and fresh nutty vanilla oak. It's long and complete, with a vibrant, seamless expression of fruit and oak culminating in a mineral finish of refreshing lemony acids and a lingering hint of wet slate.

Bright colour, showing the hallmarks of a complex, layered and meticulously detailed blend inspired by the best the Bordelaise can muster; fragrant tropical fruits, nettle, fine toasty oak and a tightly wound palate that is both complex and refreshing; long, layered and impeccable.

Beautifully seamless and complex, this lean, elegant and tightly focused expression of this oak-fermented style reveals a lightly smoky bouquet of white flowers, gooseberries and lychees backed by hints of waxiness and spice. It's long, smooth and vibrant, with brightly lit, lightly herbal fruit effortlessly knit with creamy, smoky vanilla oak influences and lightly meaty, leesy complexity. It finishes long, trim and complete, with a lingering presence of fruit, lemony acids and spicy oak.

Here comes another benchmark Wallcliffe, at once seductively seamless and silky and at the same time bracingly structured. It's a captivating interplay of remarkable complexity, encased in a beautifully polished and seamless shell, spanning coffee beans, capsicum, hazelnuts, preserved lemon, even linden blossom. The palate is the epitome of honed restraint, remarkable poise and lively energy, held firmly in place with deep-set acid grip and a finish that never seems to end

A paradigm of  barrel-fermented sauvignon blanc (68%) semillon (32%); it is estate-grown on the original estate vineyard, hand-picked and cosseted; its marriage of fruit generosity and intensity with its long, elegant, layered palate. It is remarkable, too, for the relatively low alcohol that gives rise to this cornucopia of flavours.

Never have I debated a wine as vigorously with a wine show chair as I did this blend at the Margaret River show recently. Epic oak complexity, a maelstrom of magical detail and whipcracking acidity.

I have always wanted to really like this wine, but I've never found the oak integration to be quite right. At last! The greatest Wallcliffe ever, and one of Australia's finest Sauv Sem blends. Utter complexity, stunning integration, absolute seamlessness, textural, honed, mineral and never-ending. Take a bow, Rob Mann!

This really is an exceptionally complex but beautifully balanced wine, barrel fermentation used with great skill to produce layers of flavour without compromising the varietal fruit characters; exemplary balance and mouthfeel.

This is one of the best Wallcliffe releases we've seen to date. Perfect ripeness on the nose: it smells like a fine white Bordeaux with lemons, minerals, restrained tropical and citrus fruits and a light coat of barrel-derived complexity. The palate is smoothly shaped with plenty of rich citrus flavour and creeping spiced nut flavours through the finish. Impeccably structured and eminently approachable, it will age nicely for some years yet.

This has developed into one of my favourite wines. It's a single vineyard expression made with natural yeasts and adopting barrel fermentation in new and one year old French. Lovely aromas of vanilla bean and light crme Broulee. The palate retains a tight minerally character with a fin lingering acidity. Superb.

A beautifully crafted and balanced wine; literally takes off on the mid-palate through to the finish, with fantastic drive; great citrus and mineral flavour.

Wild yeast, new French oak fermentation and mlf provide greater depth and richness than other Margaret River blends; beautifully poised and balanced.
