Cracka Review

If ever there was a wine to make an impressive debut, it’s this varietal Shiraz from WA that is designed to be drunk young. This gold-medal winning Shiraz offers so much enjoyment as it’s full of flavour and punches well above its weight. It’s lifted with red berry and black pepper aromas with notes of vanillin oak. A small amount of Viognier in the blend adds texture, gloss and some enticing aromatics. It’s gentle and approachable and just the thing for an informal barbecue with Shiraz loving friends.

Winemaker's Notes

Our Debut series of ready to drink wines are designed to present the optimal fruit characters from each variety of grape, grown in its most suitable vineyards in cool climate Western Australia.

Nose: Licorice, red berry and black pepper.

Palate: Succulent berry and black pepper flavours skillfully balanced with spicy French and vanillin American oak.

Food: Game meats, lamb and rich beef dishes or an intense matured cheddar.

Cellaring: Enjoy now.

This has more depth and is a more serious red than you'd expect at the price from the Geographe-based, well-performed Western Australian family winery. There are dense, ripe plummy flavours, smooth texture, heaps of oak and long persistent tannins

Aromatic, perfumed nose - quite sexy! Feels creamy in the mouth and tastes of mulberries and forest fruits.

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2007 Vintage) says
This has some sweet, cordial-like flavours and it's desperately musky and raspberried, but, as with the Debut Merlot of the same vintage, there's the odd green, twiggy note that we find distracting. Still, when you take off your critic's hat, those sweet, soft flavours are decent.

James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
Light but bright colour; attractive lifted red fruit flavours offset by balanced, powdery tannins; 4% viognier lifts the flavour.

More evidence of a Capel Vale upheaval. This has lush, velvety texture, rich, concentrated dark berry flavours with cedary oak notes, power and a firm, slightly grippy finish.

Not many new lines have impressed so much this year as these wines from the west—this and the white—and it's no surprise to find Larry Cherubino was consulting. I know that means bugger all to Joe Public. I mean, you've got the grapes, how hard can it be to turn them into wine? Been done for years. Well, there are winemakers and winemakers and Larry is one of the seriously good ones. This wine is very well priced and I like it a lot.

WINESTATE (2005 Vintage) says
Cool and reserved, with lovely intensity of dark, spicy fruits and firm, mouth-coating tannins on a thick, warm palate. Good spicy length.
