Cracka Review

Here's a classy, French oak matured chardy out of the Yarra Valley that would be awesome with some butter-poached shellfish, or simply with some chicken liver pate. Scents of white stone fruits, grapefruit, roasted nuts and vanilla ice-cream climb out of the glass, then the palate shows lovely, sumptuous flavours of peaches and cream, citrus and appealing savoury edges, with bright acidity, and a smooth, dry, creamy finish.

Winemaker's Notes

A complex Chardonnay resulting from a combination of barrel and stainless steel ferments with a range of winemaking techniques. Fresh stone fruit aromas and flavours are complimented by roasted nuts and vibrant citrus. Inherent balance and hallmark Yarra Valley length complete an irresistible wine.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Lighter colour and counter-intuitively lighter-bodied than the Carlei Estate; here white peach and melon are joined by a light squeeze of grapefruit and barrel ferment oak has been well-judged. Ageing slowly and impressively.

I love all the wines made by Serge Carlei, he just seems to me to be a gifted, intuitive winemaker who rarely gets it wrong. He has a lovely feel for chardonnay and pinot noir as well as making some really thoughtful and delicious shiraz from Heathcote. OK, so his labels have been a bit of a disaster in the past but even they are all right now. This is lovely, slightly funky chardonnay
