Cracka Review

We want to bring Riesling back to the masses and the way we think we should do it is by getting you to try this stunning example from Castle Rock. Riesling is full of zing and zip and really has the ability to talk of where it’s from. This is from W.A. and its loaded with citrus characters such as lime, lemon and orange blossom with interesting mineral notes. Tight and elegant with dominant citrus characters the natural acids lend balance and length. While it’s good now it’s only going to get better with some time in the cellar.

Winemaker's Notes

Appearance: Pale straw with green hues.

Nose: A tight, citrus dominated, nose, showing lime and lemon characters. Some light floral notes, orange blossom and a minerally edge adds interest.

Palate: The palate is Riesling in its purest form, tight and elegant and dominated by citrus fruit characters. The natural acidity is powerful yet wonderfully balanced and gives the wine a mineral structure and great length. The wine is tight and restrained with an attractive delicacy now, yet will blossom with age for at least ten years.

Castle Rock Estate Riesling

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Light, bright straw-green; the scented bouquet has nuances of wild flowers and herbs, together with the more usual lime blossom; the pristine palate has the hallmark intensity and magical acidity that will see the wine unfold its full glory over the next decade and long thereafter. From the Porongurup subregion.

James Halliday (2011 Vintage) says
A flowery, blossom-filled bouquet is the foreplay for an explosive palate of lime and lime zest, spice and mineral flavours that dance along an almost painfully long spine of acidity, absolutely guaranteeing the future of the wine. Ludicrously cheap. Ludicrously cheap.

Australian Wine Companion 2013
James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
An arresting bouquet of wild flower and citrus blossom leads into a classic Castle Rock palate which year-in, year-out develops great complexity, building on the extreme length already present.

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
Benchmark riesling, very elegant, complete and stylish. Its penetrative, musky bouquet of lavender and white flowers. pear, apple and lime juice precedes a long, richly flavoured but very shapely and refined palate tightly focused around a bathpowdery undercarriage and a tangy mineral acidity.
The Australian Wine Annual
Nick Stock (2010 Vintage) says
A complex nose that showcases finely struck minerality and flinty edges - really engaging and complex in its youth. An abundance of citrus fruit here, really stunning. The palate's intensely flavoured with tangelo citrus and carries bright yet ripe, zesty acidity long into the finish. Once again, an amazing wine, and well worthy of some space in both the fridge and the cellar.
The Good Wine Guide
Nick Stock (2009 Vintage) says
Super-fresh aromas here, the nose is gently flinty and spicy with plenty of pure, fresh lime citrus fruit. The palate has superb power and finesse, really driving in a punchy line of lime and apple flavour, finishing with dazzling acidity - precise and ethereal, faultless riesling.
The Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2010 2009
James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Classic Castle Rock style, its undoubted great future becoming apparent on the fine but very intense back-palate, finish and aftertaste where various citrus flavours intermingle with minerally acidity; a wine of great length.

Ray Jordan (2009 Vintage) says
Just keeps on turning out superb Rieslings from this high climes of the Porongurup's. This is flinty dry with a spicy citrus aroma. On the palate you get that clean pure minerality with a spicy complexity supported with fine acid. A wine for 10 years in the cellar.

Finesse and green pears in youth with lovely, fine, refreshing acidity and delicacy. One of Australia’s very best wines.
Australian Wine Vintages 2010
James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
A powdery/talcy/spicy bouquet; explodes on the palate with a mix of citrus and more tropical fruit flavours, then crunchy acidity on a long finish.
