Expert Reviews

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
Spicy aromas of peppery but rather baked and jammy fruit are backed by old-fashioned cedary oak. Full to medium-bodied, with generous flavours of ripe plums and small dark berries underpinned by fine, chalky tannins, it's moderately long and rich, but lacks its customary perfume and vivaciousness.

Jeremy Oliver (2009 Vintage) says
Silky and stylish, with a faintly minty and violet-like fragrance of cassis, raspberries, dark chocolates and meaty, briary complexity. It's long, lean and elegant, with intense, brightly lit flavours of sweet small berries nearly entwined around fresh vanilla/cedar oak and supple tannins, finishing with a persistent core of fruit, musky and meaty undertones.

Clear crimson-purple; an exceptionally vibrant wine, with spice and black pepper seasoning for the pure fruit profile of plum and black cherry, tannin and oak bit players on the very long finish.

Nick Stock (2007 Vintage) says
Super-spicy and peppery nose that shows strong regional typicity, terrific clarity and depth. The palate's rippling with intensity, offering bright, deep plum and spice flavours carried on fine yet assertive tannins. It's all nicely contained but make no mistake: this wine has serious power. Long plum skin finish.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Excellent crimson-purple; an altogether impressive wine that has all the cool-climate indicia of spice, pepper, plum and licorice, and also the texture and supple tannins that Castle Rock lacked in bygone years. Increased vine age plays a part, along with skilled winemaking born of experience.

Jeremy Oliver (2007 Vintage) says
A wild, spicy and brambly shiraz whose rich, peppery presence of spicy, briary red and black fruits and gamy personality knit pleasingly with undertones of leather and dark chocolate. Full to medium in impact, with a chalky, fine-grained undercarriage, genuine shape and elegance, it shows just a hint of baked fruit. Finishing long, dusty and savoury, it should develop more richness and density.

Here is a wonderful example of cool climate Shiraz. It has the liberal sprinkling of black pepper mixed with those enticing savoury riches. There's some earthy dryness on the finish while the primary plum and dark black berry fruit flavours are matched with some nice vanillin oak.
