Castro's Ligador Shiraz Mataro

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

A ligador is a master cigar blender, but there's not much in the way of cigar characters in the wine, so maybe winemaker Ben Riggs is a fan of the art. However, this fuller-bodied red blend is packed with rich, ripe dark berries and star anise spice, with just a lick of chocolate and pepper. The palate is plush and juciy, with spiced berry flavours, friendly tannins and a decent finish. Great with BBQ beef short ribs.

Winemaker's Notes

The wine has a long, soft and juicy palate and lush mouth feel, bursting with nuances of blackberry, blueberry jam and liquorice. The spiciness of the Mataro increases the intensity of the Shiraz fruit on the palate, giving it more of a masculine punch. A powerful wine which is a perfect complement to rich food. A wine that delivers an exceptional McLaren Vale Shiraz experience. Enjoy now or cellar over the next 7 years.

Wine Companion (2013 Vintage) says
This is absolutely packed to the gills with sultry black fruits on the mid-palate, opening up on the finish, where bitter chocolate, savoury/earthy/woodsy notes dance a fandango. Surprise packet.
