Cracka Review

A tribute to all those who lived at Chain of Ponds from 1870-1970 and all that remains of the Hamlet today is a cemetery. This is classic Adelaide Hills Shiraz showing plum and other black fruits as well as trademark spice. The palate is savoury with lovely depth and soft, supple tannins.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep purple with a vibrant plum hue. Aromas of spiced plums, Christmas cake, black cherry and subtle freshly cracked white pepper with a hint of leather. The palate is elegant and complex, displaying dark cherry, juicy plums with secondary characters of black olive and dried herbs. Medium bodied with a gentle and aromatic tannin structure. Soft, balanced acidity matches the delicate lingering fruit and spice which finishes with a hint of nuttiness. A perfect match to game and red meat, especially kangaroo or venison.

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Good crimson-purple hue and clarity; the black cherry fruit on the bouquet has a liberal dusting of spice and pepper, blackberry and bitter chocolate minor players chiming in on the palate; the sweet fruit on the finish is neatly balanced by firm tannins.

Good hue; a fresh and lively light-to medium-bodied shiraz with aromatic spice, pepper and red and black small berry/cherry fruits; oak and tannins are in appropriately delicate balance.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Better colour hue, better freshness and better flavours than most '07 reds at this price point (or higher, perhaps); has supple, ripe red and black cherry fruit plus spice and a hint of licorice; tannin and oak handling good.

WINESTATE (2006 Vintage) says
Spicy, herbal nose - slight medicinal character - and sweet vanillin oak palate with fruit underneath.

James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
Showing some development; spicy, earthy overtones to raspberry and blackberry fruit on the medium-bodied palate; fine tannins. Adelaide Hills/Kangaroo Island.

WINESTATE (2004 Vintage) says
Good blend of charry oak and peppery notes on the nose ,and more pepper on the fleshy, licorice palate.
Winestate 20082009
James Halliday (1999 Vintage) says
Deep, bright red-purple; clean, fresh juicy/berry fruit on the bouquet is followed by luscious and sweet berry fruit on the palate. Neither the oak, nor the extract, nor the alcohol (13.5°) has been overdone.
