Adelaide Hills Shiraz is so hot right now, largely because its cool. Cool climate that is, with the extra altitude of the Hills giving this a welcome spicy edge. We love a bit of spice in our Shiraz here, which is why we like this.
The "Chain of Ponds" story began in 1985 with the planting of a small pilot block at Gumeracha to test the suitability of several emergent grape varieties to the cool climate in the Chain of Ponds vineyards. The success of that exercise and the skill of our winemaker have captured the unique characteristics of these varietals in an innovative range of wines. The "Pilot Block" label is our recognition of that pioneering vineyard.
The palate is rich, with dominant blackcurrant and hints of dark plum and blackberry. Good tight acidity and smooth velvety tannins complement the spicy backbone of supporting oak. An underlying savoury character gives the wine an extra layer of complexity.
