Champagne Barons de Rothschild Brut

Cracka Review

The Rothschild family have their finger in many wine pies, and here is one they have in Champagne. Made from a traditional blend of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier, this is a richer style of Champagne that shows lots of bready and nutty characters on the nose, along with some red apples, fruits and butter. The palate is pretty dry and creamy, with a fine bubble, balanced citrus acidity, and a lush, nutty finish. Top notch stuff.

Winemaker's Notes

A carefully balanced blend, for a highly sophisticated champagne. This cuvee is a result of a complex assemblage, or blend, of 60% Chardonnay, primarily grands cur from the cote des Blancs, 40% Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, mainly from Verzenay, Ay, mareuilsur- Ay and Bouzy.

This blend includes 40% reserve wines, a mark of exceptional quality and consistency over time.

Appearance: The wine's brilliance and clarity show pale golden highlights, combined with very fine bubbles that carry an abundant, persistent foam.

Nose: This exceptionally fine cuvee exudes aromas of pear and nuts (almonds, white flowers and faint toasty notes.)

Palate: A strong, assertive opening that leads into a well-rounded wine that is powerful yet contained; the sign of long ageing in traditional cellars.

Barons de Rothschild Brut champagne is a complex wine for all moments, ideal as an aperitif or with a Champagne meal. It pairs with light dishes, lightly seared scallops, shellfish and rockfish. Then savour the cuvee with a risotto, a chicken dish or another white meat. End your meal with cheese, a farm-fresh Brie de beaux or chaource.

Nick Stock says
When the famous Bordeaux Rothschild family decided to get into the Champagne region, they meant business. The resulting Champagne is a rich and classicly complex style, showing abundant toasty reserve-wine complexity, grilled nuts, nougat, some red fruits and spice. Creamy texture and a rich finish.
