James Halliday (2011 Vintage) says
Light colour; from old vines, with spiced red berry aromas and flavours that include raspberry and cherry, but (happily) little confection characters, just those spices of the bouquet.

Raspberry berry fruit and black pepper savoury spice with pythium. In the mouth, the wine is very generous and giving, ripe sweet fruit raspberry flavours and integrated very fine soft tannins that carry the flavours. The finish is subtle and chalky as a young wine and should build in time as the finish is firm and drying and needs time to soften and open.

Spotlessly made, with genuine freshness and balance, this lively young grenache has a fragrance of red flowers, raspberries, blueberries and light, dusty oak. Medium to full-bodied it's smooth and juicy, with a fine, drying and slatey undercarriage beneath vibrant flavours of redcurrants, blueberries and cherries, culminating in a finish of brightness and lively acidity.

"This is serious Grenache. nose of smokiness, meatiness, 5 Spice, Asian BBQ sauces...it's almost a Peking Duck pancake with fresh chives. That is an important distinction, the chives: it denotes a freshness along side the savoury aspect. The palate has some of the traditional choco/raspberry flavours you associate with McLaren Vale, but it's almost secondary rather than primary. Complex, earthy and belieing it's 15% alcohol, this is a wine of balance and exquisite fruit flavours, not jammy sweet booze with heat. "

A reserved, complex and meaty grenache whose deep, rather closed and faintly reductive dark-fruited bouquet of plums and blackberries reveals spicy, earthy undertones. It's smooth and evenly ripened, with genuine length and depth of sour-edged fruit underpinned by a creamy, finegrained, chewy texture and wrapped in balanced, gentle acids. Already quite funky, but likely to mature in a slow and stable fashion.

Solid intense rse, red cherry raspberry fruit with concentration and power and new oak support for aging. Varietal raspberry fruit and spice and dusty herbs makes up the smooth tannin warm and ripe palate with structure and a soft tannin finish.

A meaty, rather baked and earthy grenache whose generous presence of blueberries, blackberries, briar and dark plums overlies a suggestion of treacle. It's very smooth and fine-grained, with deep, rather forward and jammy plum and berry flavours that extend down the palate with moderate length, but do finish with suggestions of baked fruit, menthol and eucalypt.

Vibrant hue; a generous offering of sweet red fruits, supported by a touch of Provencal herbs for complexity; very fleshy mid-palate, there is real depth to the fruit in this wine, signing off with a slight savoury finish; classic (now on the 10).

Tyson Stelzer (2008 Vintage) says
Gotta admire the life and presence of the rhubarb, berry and plum fruit at the core of this wine, because it’s in no way shaken by tremors registering fifteen degrees on the Richter (octane) scale. It’s ripe and plush, so it finishes sweet rather than dry—crucial here—so give it a light chill to settle everything down.

The product of some old vines and low yields, this is a handy grenache from the Vale, fresh and light with red berry fruits, some cherry and light plum aromas, a little tarry too, and some licorice. Nice palate weight, all anchored into place; the finish is tighter and more structured than others in the line-up, and tannins deepen nicely and build.

Typical McLaren Vale grenache; deep in flavour and mouthfeel, and very aromatic without the least confection character; resonating black fruits through to the finish.

Fair to say that if you buy a 2007 red wine with the Chapel Hill label on it, then you're buying a beautiful drink. It's full of sweet fruit flavour but it has gutsy tannin and a determined thrust of flavour through the finish. Raspberries, sandalwood, cloves and cedar-spice. Medium-weight but oodles of perfume and length. It's not like a thick-flavoured shiraz, but it's a terrific grenache. Just be careful of the alcohol here.

Very dark plum fruits with a little tar and a hint of chocolate in the background; lovely texture and weight, showing grenache plushness to the finish.

This is the stuff that McLaren Vale should be famous for: super-rich, earthy red fruits, a decent dose of French oak and some fine nut and spice complexity. The palate is concentrated and mouth-filling, driving rich, ripe, wild red fruit flavour deep through the finish; supple tannins to close.
