Cracka Review

Charles Heidsieck have made major changes over the past few years, and the latest releases are something to behold. Made from a blend of pinot noir and chardonnay, this 2000 vintage is quite power-packed, with rich aromas of roasted nuts, red berries, ginger, honey and citrus climbing out of the glass. The palate is quite plush and mouth filling, with lots of fruit and nuttiness, licks of peaches and cream, a fine bubble, and a long, lingering finish with a kick of buttered toast in the tail. A lovely champagne that should live for a few more years yet.

Winemaker's Notes

A grand cuvee for a grand vintage.

To the eye: A deep golden hue with warm highlights of Indian summer, the result of twelve years of ageing in thousand-year old chalk cellars. An exceptionally delicate, yet long-lasting and present effervescence.

To the nose: The selection of 58% Pinot Noir complemented with 42% Chardonnay reveals concentrated dense aromas of the humus and ferns of the forest mingled with the floral notes of musk rose. The grands and pemier crus of Pinot Noir emanate the sharp spicy notes of white pepper, liquorice and Espelette peppers.

On the palate: This triumphant wine, generous and powerful, is the very expression of the year 2000. Plush with red currants, blackberries and blueberries it carries, it reveals a texture and richness of candied chestnuts. With an incredibly long finish, the structure offered by the Pinot Noir if nothing less than majestic. The Chardonnay crus contribute a focused, complex personality.

Nick Stock (2000 Vintage) says
A deeper, golden colour in the glass, this has a fine bead and smells of spiced honey and nougat, some grilled nuts and lemony citrus aromas here too. The palate is fresh and composed with finely beaded texture, some Closure Cork brisk, zesty acidity and plenty of toasty flavour amid lemon zest and chalky nuances. Complex and poised.
