1999 was a stand-out vintage in champagne, and this is a stand-out Rose. Made mostly from pinot noir, with a cheeky splash of pinot noir table wine for added depth and interest, this is only the third vintage Rose to be produced since 1985, which makes it a bit of a rarity. Smells of red berries, soft spices, rose florals and buttered toast waft out of the glass, whilst the palate is quite rich and densely flavoured, with tastes of spiced strawberry and subtle savouriness, a silky, creamy mouthfeel, fine bubbles, and a long, sauntering spice and toast finish. Excellent stuff!

Winemaker's Notes

A grand rose for grand vintage.

To the eye: A subtle coral with nuances of orange, reminiscent of old roses and the result of the prolonged ageing in the chalk cellars. The delicate, joyful effervescence hints at the aromatic complexity of this blended rose.

To the nose: The subtle elegance of this wine produced from grands and premier crus reveals notes of strawberry and raspberry. The Pinot Noir red wines - 7% of the blend - offer the complexity of mild pepper and sandalwood.

On the palate: A sophisticated wine, full-bodied and generous, this is the very expression of the year 1999, enhanced by more than twelve years of ageing in thousand-year old cellars. The refined texture is reminiscent of the silky rich harmony of hibiscus syrup.

This is one of the best rose styles available on the Australian market: rich, complex and spicy, intense red fruits and some toast beginning to show. Deep pinot flavour, impressive weight, richness and persistence.

Powerful, almond-like aromas with plenty of meaty complexity. Very complex palate filled with flavours of redcurrants and cherries, edged with excellent toastiness and obvious sugar.
