Australian Wine Companion 2014 Edition 2013
Tyson Stelzer (2009 Vintage) says
While this wineÍs predecessor, Richelieu 2006, hailed from Bob McLeanÍs block high atop Mengler Hill, the glorious grenache vintage of 2009 permitted a very different story to unfold. Sourced from dry grown bush vines in a core block for MeltonÍs Nine Popes Blend on the Barossa Valley floor, this is the quintessential Barossa grenache. It bubbles with every classic hallmark of the variety: magical exotic spice, dried flowers, pipe smoke, raspberries, dark berry fruits and finely textured tannins. Oak lends high cocoa dark chocolate and cedar nuances without interrupting its supple fruit flow.
Wine Taste Special Edition 89 2012
James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Pure dark fruits abound in the bouquet, with an intriguing Provencal herb complexity, offset by ironstone minerality; long, luscious, pure and poised, and given the 26 months in French oak barriques, a massive departure from traditional Barossa grenache.
Australian Wine Companion 2013 2012
Nick Stock (2009 Vintage) says
A single-vineyard grenache from the reliable Melton stable. This has a deep colour in the glass and shows a wealth of dark summer berry fruits and a gently earthy side; oak is nicely matched and it s a profound yet young statement for now. The palate delivers bright, crunchy red and dark berry fruit flavours, with terrific concentration and a thread of chocolate amid driving, ripe, nutty tannins. This will age handsomely.
Good Wine Guide 2013
Tyson Stelzer (2006 Vintage) says
Grenache master Charlie Melton makes tiny quantities of this wine from Bob McLean’s block high atop Mengler Hill. This elevated site blesses the wine with lovely fragrant herb, cedar and mixed spice notes.
