Medium red-purple; dark fruits, sweet leather and savoury/oaky aromas swirl through a complex bouquet; the powerful and intense palate offers a mix of dark berry and more savoury flavours. The tannins are well balanced and the oak well integrated.

Dark, mouthfilling and crammed with ripe fruit characters, this is a serious yet sensuous Hawke's Bay red, with a seductive intensity of spicy, vibrant, almost sweet-tasting flavour. It is grown in a mix of clay and stone at Te Awanga, where the vines yield only two to 2.5 tonnes per acre. The Reserve Merlot includes about 5 per cent of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and is matured for 18 months in French (80 per cent) and American oak (20 per cent); about 70 per cent of the barrels are new each year. The 1998 is deeply coloured, with a warm, ripe bouquet showing a fine balance of fruit and oak. The palate is generous and supple, with strong, ripe plum/cherry flavours seasoned with toasty oak. Dense, rich wine, it should mature splendidly.

The 1997 is Clearview's best red of the vintage. Densely coloured, bold and lush, it's crammed with warm, plummy, spicy, minty flavour, wrapped in sweet oak. Generous and supple, it's already highly approachable.

Very good purple-red; the bouquet is slightly lighter than the '94, but will evolve with more bottle age. The palate is long and intense with lively and fresh mint, leaf and red berry flavours, finishing with fine tannins.
