Expert Reviews

Michael Cooper (2008 Vintage) says
Mature Marlborough wine, yellow/green, with grapefruit, peach and spice flavours, a hint of marmalade, slightly toasty bottle-aged notes and good complexity. Sweet but not super-sweet, with a rounded finish. Ready now.

Barrel-aged for 18 months, this citrusy, minerally wine is drinking well now, with classic, slightly toasty, aged riesling characters emerging, and lovely richness, vigour and presence. ÔGermanic', wrote two judges.

Cloudy Bay only makes this Marlborough wine about every second year, on average, but it's usually worth waiting for. The 2005 vintage was matured for six months in old oak barrels. Pale gold, it is highly scented, poised and rich, with citrusy, peachy, slightly spicy and honeyed flavours, considerable sweetness (128 grams/litre of residual sugar), a minerally streak and good, bottle-aged complexity. Full of personality, it's lovely now.

Cloudy Bay only makes this Marlborough wine about every second year, on average, but it's usually worth waiting for. The 2004 vintage was harvested in the Ashmore Vineyard at Fairhall, when the grape sugar levels had reached an average of 30 brix and over half of the berries were botrytis-affected. Fermented in a mix of tanks and barrels, then matured on its yeast lees in old French oak casks for 18 months, it's a lemon-hued, citrusy, honeyed wine with a scented, complex bouquet. Rich and refined, with greater complexity than most New Zealand dessert wines, it offers lovely drinking from now onwards.

Cloudy Bay only makes this dessert wine occasionally, but it's well worth waiting for. The pale gold 1999 vintage is enticingly scented, with a lovely surge of sweet, lemony, honied flavour. Crisp and intense, it reveals a very seductive balance of rich, ripe Riesling fruit and Botrytis, with a lasting finish. A classic sweet Riesling, it's already delectable, but a strong candidate for cellaring.
