Coldstream Hills Deer Farm Vineyard Chardonnay

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

From yet another very good Yarra Valley vintage comes this single vineyard chardy. It's a bit of an 'old school meets new school' style of wine that shows generous oak on the nose, with aromas of white peach and lemon citrus playing a good supporting role. The palate is medium-boded and quite zippy, with yellow citrus, lip-smacking flavours, licks of toasted vanilla bean, a touch of creaminess, and a bright, refreshing talcy finish. Roast chicken and sage stuffing would be awesome with this.

Winemaker's Notes

Coldstream Hills prides itself for having access to many of the best vineyards in the Yarra Valley. These sites are found throughout the upper and lower Yarra Valley with each vineyard providing a range of unique characteristics to the wines.

Back in the late 1980s, James Halliday introduced single vineyard wines to Coldstream Hills demonstrating their unique styles. The tradition has continued with the release of the Single Vineyard range.

Appearance: Pale straw with trace green.

Nose: Attractive notes of citrus, stone-fruit and white flowers are evident with underlying nuances of mineral and nougat. French oak is evident and subtle, but does not dominate.

Palate: Fine, pure and restrained, the wine displays vibrant characters of grapefruit and lemon curd. Seamless French oak enhances the palate which is underpinned with mineral notes and beautifully balanced acidity.

Cellaring: To 2021

Alcohol: 13%

WINESTATE (2012 Vintage) says
An oaky number, with good spicy notes and layers of fresh lime and Granny Smith apple-like elements. Well made, just needs more time.
Tyson Stelzer (2011 Vintage) says
A delightful bouquet at once epitomises the pristine lemon blossom, white peach, grapefruit and fig of Upper Yarra chardonnay and at the same time the beautiful nutmeg and vanilla overlay of sensitively handled French oak. The palate is a spectacular continuation of the same show, strung together by an intricate, silver thread of cool season acidity, driven by an undercurrent of finely textured minerality. A sensational and beautiful single vineyard Upper Yarra chardonnay that lingers with undeterred line and wonderful persistence.

A breathtaking single vineyard Upper Yarra Chardonnay of undeterred line and graceful persistence. Sensitively handled French oak provides a gentle overlay of nutmeg and vanilla to pristine aromas of lemon blossom, white peach, grapefruit and fig. The palate is a spectacular continuation of the same show, laced together by an intricate, silver thread of cool-season acidity and an undercurrent of fine minerality. 2 trophies, 4 gold medals.

Jeremy Oliver (2011 Vintage) says
Long, taut and trim, this leaner but charmingly balanced chardonnay has a complex, sweetly oaked bouquet of grapefruit, lemon zest and a hint of melon lifted by spicy, floral scents. Smooth and supple, it's piercingly intense but very elegant, with a lingering note of ruby grapefruit knit with creamy vanilla oak before finishing long and juicy with a puckering grapefruit-like acidity.

Restrained flinty/minerally nose and very lean palate with lovely fruit and some powerful, mouth-watering acidity. "A class act," suggested one judge. 3-5
