Although Corbans' second-tier Gisborne label, this is still one of the region's greatest wines, typically offering deep, ripe citrus/melon flavours, well-integrated biscuity oak and a long, creamy finish. Fully barrel-fermented, with increasing use of indigenous yeasts, on average the wine spends 10 months in new and one-year-old French oak barriques, with a moderate degree of lees stirring to avoid dominating the rich fruit characters. Slightly lighter than the classic 1996 the 1997 is a very good wine, but less concentrated than the wines from top vintages. It reveals a citrusy, nutty bouquet and firm, elegant, well-balanced palate with satisfying depth of citrus/melon flavours and a touch of biscuity oak.
