Cullen Margaret River White

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Drawn from the certified biodynamic Cullen vineyard and the (adjoining) certified 'in conversion' Mangan vineyard, this blend is based on Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, topped off with a little Chardonnay for extra mid palate richness, all bottled in a style that is deliberately fresh and designed to be drunk young, but also with extra complexity than plenty of other wines of this ilk.

What makes this particularly attractive too is simply how well balanced it is. It smells of grassy Sauvignon Blanc, with a nose that is much more Oz than Marlborough in style, with the Semillon than backing up with citrussy roundness and crisp acidity. All combined it makes for a quite multi-faceted dry white that belies it's price point to make for some surprisingly serious drinking.

Winemaker's Notes

Cullen Wines have carefully blended fruit from a range of white grape varieties to produce a delicious dry wine that is ideal for summer drinking. While the main grape varieties are Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, the addition of small volumes of Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Verdelho and the blending of fruit from the Mangan and Cullen Vineyards have added a subtlety not usually found in an entry level wine. As this wine has an alcohol concentration of only 11.6% ,it is ideal for a party occasion or for drinking prior to a BBQ.

Nose: Fresh and intense, floral, passionfruit and citrus aromas.

Palate: Fresh silky, long and smooth, with the passionfruit characters flowing through from the bouquet to produce a sumptuous middle palate.

Food: Excellent as an aperitif or with any crustacean or fish dishes or pasta.

Cellaring: Enjoy over the next 2-3 years.

Arguably the ultimate expression of Margaret River classic dry white; while the fruit is juicy and zesty, the wine has a restraint and elegance apparent on its long palate, and in particular, the finish. Sauvignon Blanc (44%)/Semillon (36%)/Chardonnay (11%)/Verdelho (4%).

Cullen’s most sublime Sauvignon blend to date. Its frangipani, gooseberry and green apple fruit engulfs 70% new oak. With chalky minerality and a zesty lemon and lime finish, this will be a long-lived wine indeed. Epic.
Nick Stock (2009 Vintage) says
A blend of the Cullen and Mangan vineyards, this rolls sauvignon blanc, semillon, chardonnay and verdelho together and delivers an approachable and savoury-smelling white with tropical fruit flavours, some stone fruits and plenty of flesh.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
The dominant Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blend inevitably (and appropriately) results in a full-flavoured wine smoothed by a small amount of chardonnay and verdelho.
