d'Arenberg Cadenzia Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre

Expert Reviews

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
A deeply layered and charmingly complex older styled red with a briary, rustic and faintly meaty bouquet of blackberries, blueberries and dark plums backed by nuances of licorice, five spice, cedar and vanilla. Medium to full-bodied, with a luscious depth of dark plums, berries and briary, meaty, chocolatey influences, it's supported by a slightly immature extract of pliant tannins but will certainly settle down with time.

Fine, savoury and restrained, with a scent of red flowers, baked earth and redcurrants backed by nuances of blackberries, prunes, fresh spices and bitumen. Long and juicy, medium in weight, its fresh dark fruit knits tightly with a fine mouthwatering astringency, finishing with a racy acidity.

A beautiful if bigger mix of sweet-fruited grenache shiraz and mourvedre berries with tannins to finish giving a savoury full-bodied complex firm finish. Improved in 08 by additional Rhone varieties.

Strong crimson-purple; as ever, the weight and fruit depth of McLaren Vale grenache comes to the fore; given the challenge of the vintage, this is a truly delicious wine.

Medium-bodied and full of life; juicy red fruits, slight savoury nuances and fresh acidity on the finish; a very good expression of the blend.

Nick Stock (2006 Vintage) says
There's some real resolve about this three-way blend, plenty of savoury dark berry fruit, the grenache lifts lighter red tones and mourvedre punches down deeper into savoury territory. Powerful plum and cherry fruit on the palate, really superb blending has it evenly balanced and made for some cellaring potential. Solid tannins.

Much stronger colour than The Custodian; deeper, richer flavours across the black and red fruit spectrum; balanced tannins and extract.

Peter Forrestal (2005 Vintage) says
The McLaren Vale's liveliest winery has never performed better and it's been buying up old vineyards in the McLaren Vale at an amazing rate, at a time when everyone else is playing the quiet, cautious game. Its access to substantial volumes of quality, old-vine grenache is clearly shown in wines like this. There are raspberry and redcurrant jelly flavours, a pleasing juiciness in the mid-palate and a finish that is long and fine.

Black jube-like aromas with attractive earthiness. Fleshy and ripe in the mouth, with good length of savoury flavours.

Light to medium-bodied; spicy, jammy, juicy style; minimal tannins and oak; the dreaded Zork.
