d'Arenberg The Noble Wrinkled Riesling

Expert Reviews

Jeremy Oliver (2011 Vintage) says
A fresh, focused, long and brightly lit expression of this dessert wine whose scent of orange rind, lemon blossom and apricot reveals waxy nuances of clove and cinnamon. It's luscious and sweet, with an evenly ripened expression of tangy citrus, peach and honeyed fruit underpinned by a fine sherbet-like texture and tied neatly together by a bright, lemony acidity.

Uncomplicated but very luscious and generous, this unctuous, sweet and intensely flavoured young dessert nesling has a pure, concentrated bouquet of lemon rind, pear and apple backed by a hint of brioche. There's no botrytis in sight, but the palate is long, smooth and delicious, with pleasing movement towards a finish of freshness and clarity.

The latest of the riesling botrytis-style wines from the d'Arenberg stable has a deep orange colour, showing plenty of botrytis apricots and lime marmalade on the nose, nicely captured. The palate's sporting some malty flavours, deeper citrus, apricot and cold tea too - luscious finish.

Arguably the best of a fascinating trio, each in a different ratio of alcohol to sweetness; lacks riesling varietal character, but there is good acidity.

Very luscious and concentrated, this heavily botrytised riesling has a voluminous and honeyed bouquet of apricots, white peaches and lemon zest. Its deeply flavoured palate of rare richness and viscosity presents a marmalade and essence-like expression of fruit, finishing long and sweet but balanced with clean and refreshing citrusy acidity.

This has deep orange colour - really striking in the glass - and there's plenty of marmalade-like aromas and flavours, nutty elements and full-tilt apricot botrytis. The palate's intensely textural and long on flavour - a really lip-smacking and delicious nectar.
