Cracka Review

2011 was a brilliant red vintage in the Hunter Valley, and this one is from old, low-yielding vines. Lovely aromas of red and black spiced berries float out of the glass, along with whiffs of earthiness. The palate is medium-bodied and elegant, with blackberry and meaty savoury flavours, fine, slinky tannins, and a spicy, earthy finish. Only 275-dozen were made, so be quick!

Winemaker's Notes

The fruit was ripe and clean and in excellent condition when it was hand picked in mid February 2011. The grapes were fermented in traditional open fermenters, which were hand plunged and then basket pressed. The resulting wine was stored in French oak barrels for 12 months. After blending the wine was only lightly fined followed by coarse filtration prior to bottling.

Deep brick red in colour the wine has subtle aromas of spice, pepper and savoury oak. The palate is medium weight with blackberry fruit dominating, firm but with a long soft savoury finish.

Although this wine is soft and approachable now it will improve with cellaring for 4 to 6 years.

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Absolute classic Hunter semillon, crisp and crunchy, with vibrant acidity providing the structure for the citrus and grass/herb/lemongrass flavours of the clearly defined and poised palate.

It's the texture (and unforced acidity( that really makes this wine happen. It tastes of orange peel, earth, deli meats, nuts and mixed berries. Beautiful tannin at work here - lush, powdery and smooth. It has good length and is medium-bodied. Oh, those tannins.  Wonderful to feel in your mouth. Earthy flavours on exit. Nice wine. Gows and builds with time in the glass.

Nick Stock (2007 Vintage) says
A solid vintage and a reliably medium-weight modish Hunter shiraz that has plenty of ripe dark-plum fruits and gentle spice; some dry Hunter earthy accents too. The palate's very much in step, showing a slightly smoky, spicy edge across dark berry and plum, mid-palate tannin gather and a long, supple finish.

Nick Stock (2006 Vintage) says
Typical Hunter brightness here, with violets and really attractive floral lift, some gentle berries below and cocoa powder in the background. Supple berry-flavoured palate and a lively kick of acidity through the finish -handy, elegant resolve with understated power and balance thanks, in part, to these old vines.

A lively, dark-fruited shiraz; there is real depth and a chewy clement, and the finish is fresh, vibrant and truly focused.

A distinct style of classic Hunter shiraz created in the vineyard. The red fruit has strength and vibrancy with the typical savoury edge, bold fresh tannins that need time to soften before reaching their best. Cherry, rhubarb, red berry fruit and low oak levels and tannins that open and soften with time.

Some earthy regional notes on a foundation of powerful blackberry fruit; needs 10+ years to fully open.

Abundant, rich, plum and blackberry fruit; medium to full-bodied; excellent flesh and structure.

Medium to full red-purple; clean, smooth dark cherry and plum fruit intermingle with touches of regional earth on the bouquet; the rounded, rich and ripe - but not jammy - palate has the tannins to sustain the wine for the long term.
