Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Bright, clear crimson; a fragrant bouquet of red and black fruits, then a captivating burst of energy and intensity to the beautifully weighted palate, the tannin texture exemplary.

Tyson Stelzer (2008 Vintage) says
A remarkable wine, it is at once lifted, lively and floral and at the same time structured and introspective. It ricochets with violets and cherries, star anise and pepper amid a mass of fine, gravelly tannins. For all of its complexity, it has incredible coherency and focus.

Not a shiraz viognier fruit bomb. Subtle red berry fruit, medium bodied, sinewy smooth peppery and spice finish with good structure

"Pretty sexy stuff. It slinks through he mouth, all plums wrapped in satin wrapped in kisses. There's a host of pepper spice resting in the background and cedary oak that has been taken up fully by the wine's layers of fruit flavour. A gorgeous sense of finesse. And length. A wine that does youth beautifully."

"Made by a team of Pinot masters. It's a little wonder that this is a seductively silky wine. Maker Steve Webber cares more for charm, character and detail than he does for varietal flavour, and wines like this show why. Layered with spice and ultra-fine tannins. It's a beautifully polished style with the texture of a Grand Cru."

De Bortoli's top reds can confidently strut the world's quality-wine stage. Pretty sexy stuff. It slinks through the mouth, all plums wrapped in satin wrapped in kisses. Typical bright hue; a highly fragrant bouquet leaps out of the glass; finely structured, with extreme length to the spicy fruits and subtle oak.

A very stylish, sophisticated and complex cool spicy shiraz: lovely fine spices and bright, dark mineral characters, some savoury plums, pepper and bright fragrance; smells cool and nervy. Bright fruit palate with fine intense dried plum and dark chocolate flavours, elegantly shaped tannins and deep, soulful style.

Want to know how close Aussie shiraz viognier can be to the wines and styles of France's (northern)Rhone Valley? Drink a bottle of this. 2006 RELEASE Viognier can get in the way of good shiraz at times but no such problem here. It's a cool-climate shiraz but it's bursting with life, spice and flavour. Plums, boysenberry, meat, smoke, pepper and a whole host of other ingredients. It all comes in plush, smooth form, though the finish is coiled with cellar-worthy tannin. A terrific Yarra shiraz. DRINK 2012-2017.

Jeremy Oliver (2006 Vintage) says
"Striking a fine balance between brambly, if slightly confectionery flavours of raspberries, cherries and dark plums and a smoky, meaty and funky complexity, this firm, bony and savoury blend steadily reveals more earthy, spicy and rustic undertones. It's dusted with a scent of dried herbs, musk and iris, and while its smooth and supple palate might be drying and grippy, it still delivers plenty of vibrant black and red berry fruit."

Startling depth of colour and hue; a mouth-coating array of flavours featuring spice, anise almost into dried fruits (as opposed to lolly sweet or to dead fruit characters). Excellent tannin texture and structure.

Vivid purple-red; floods the mouth with red fruit and balanced flavours, but is elegant and medium-bodied thanks to the restrained alcohol; great texture, structure and harmony.
