Cracka Review

Hunter Shiraz has never been in a better spot and Mike De Iuliis is one of the new breed ensuring that this medium bodied style gets the respect it deserves. If you’ve never tried this unique regional expression of Shiraz, then you’ll be rewarded by a fragrant wine, characterised by sweet and savoury fruit. It’s earthy and spiced with vital black fruits before a ripe fruit palate, some subtle oak and nicely rounded tannins. Elegant and underplayed, this is modern Hunter Shiraz at its best.

Winemaker's Notes

One of the great wines of Australia, Hunter Shiraz is powerful as it is subtle. Everything is in balance: Pure ripe blackberry fruit flavours, some spice and earthy characters and round soft tannins. Drinking well now but will continue to improve with 5 plus years further cellaring.

Alcohol: 13.3%

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Crimson-purple; has everything you could wish for, everything in its right place, everything in balance: expressive blackberry/black cherry fruit; some regional earth and spice; and ripe, balanced tannins to carry it through the coming decades.

Tyson Stelzer (2009 Vintage) says
Single vineyard wines are the future of the Hunter, says the charismatic Mike De Iuliis, who has rightfully resurrected the historic Steven Vineyard to front label status. Delightfully medium bodied at 13.0%, this is a wine of great restraint and texture, yet immense concentration of black fruits, coal and violets.
