Delatite Devils River Cabernet Merlot

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Delatite are renowned for turning out wonderfully aromatic whites, but the cool climate of Mt Buller can also produce some intensely flavoured reds. Delatite were fortunate enough to be awarded fives stars for quality in wine writer James Halliday’s annual wine guide. This Cabernet blend is complexed by the addition of Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc making it into a classic Bordeaux blend. Expect to find a nose rich in black berries, exotic spices ,plums and mint as well as some vanillin oak. The fine tannins drive the palate providing for a firm yet generous medium bodied red that would pair well with lamb.

Winemaker's Notes

Normal flavours include different spices (such as cinnamon and cardoman), mint, plums, and blackberries along with some vanilla from the oak. Tannins are generally in the mid range and the only fining agents used are egg whites (organic and free range eggs, of course!). It’s matured in a mix of one to three-year old French and American barriques and hogsheads for up to15 months and now that it’s under screw cap the 2008 will cellar beautifully for up to twenty years +.

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Bright crimson hue; a time-honoured wine that has thrown off the strong minty characters it once had, now with attractive cassis fruit and fine-grained tannins on the long finish. Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon.

Light, bright crimson; bubbling with a basket of fresh-picked berry fruits (cherry/raspberry/mulberry) backed by superfine tannins and good acidity. Lovely light-bodied red. Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Malbec/Cabernet Franc.

Medium- to full-bodied; cassis, blackcurrant and a twist of olive, the tannins savoury but not green, notwithstanding the low alcohol.
