Delatite The Donald Tempranillo

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Tempranillo is one of the hottest grape varieties right now, and this is a decent example of what all the fuss is about. There is plump black and plummy fruits on the nose, along with a lick of dark chocolate. The palate is opulent showing the same rich, dark fruits with some soft, earthy spices and some quite macho tannins that provide a bit of grip on the finish. It will soften over the next few years, but you can give it some air now and it can stand up to some meaty dishes.

Winemaker's Notes

Named for our son Donald who helped plunge it during fermene and was very jealous that his sister had Polly named after her! Our Tempranillo is a strong and robust wine with a nose of plums and blackberry and a palate of dark rich fruits overlayed with a wonderful dark chocolate element and firm masculine tannins that give the wine a firm but not overpowering grip. This wine is great while young but will mellow with age giving spicey and mushroom characters over five years.

Finely crafted and elegant, with a sweet, faintly smoky bouquet of dark chocolates, cloves and licorice, dark berries and plums with a fresh suggestion of mocha oak and dried herbs. It's sumptuous and juicy, plush aid round, but extends nicely down the palate with a fine, firmish and dusty backbone, finishing with clarity, brightness and just a hint of mintiness.
