Delegat's Hawke's Bay Chardonnay

Expert Reviews

Michael Cooper (2008 Vintage) says
For Delegat's lower-tier Chardonnay, the idea is: 'let the fruit do the talking'. The 2008 vintage fermented in tanks and barrels, is flavoursome, peachy and citrusy, in a ripe, vibrantly fruity style, creamy-textured, with strong drink-young appeal.

Michael Cooper (2003 Vintage) says
For Delegat's bargain-priced, lower-tier Chardonnay, the goal is to 'let the fruit do the talking', with wood relegated to a minor role. Fermented in stainless steel tanks and then matured for six months in seasoned oak, the 2002 vintage is deliciously fleshy and smooth, with ripe fruit characters to the fore and a rich, rounded finish. The 2003 is more wood-influenced than usual, because it includes a barrel-fermented portion originally earmarked for the Reserve Chardonnay label (not released from 2003). Pale yellow, it's a citrusy, nutty, slightly buttery, flavoursome wine with a firm, crisp finish.

For Delegat's 'commercial' Chardonnay, the goal is to 'let the fruit do the talking', with wood relegated to a minor role. The 1998 vintage is far superior to the 1997. The '98 is a beautifully crafted wine, full and fragrant, with very good depth of citrus/melon flavours and a soft, fairly rich finish. It's not complex, but immensely pleasureable. Tasted prior to bottling, the 1999 (not rated) offered fresh, crisp lemon/apple flavours in a straightforward style.
