Expert Reviews

Michael Cooper (1999 Vintage) says
The 1998 vintage is a wonderful buy. Grown in Hawke's Bay and matured in new and one-year-old French oak casks, it's a powerful, chewy red, needing time, with deep, bright colour and firm, concentrated flavours of blackcurrants, spice and nuts, with a slightly chocolatey richness. Very substantial (14.5 per cent alcohol), it's a warm, savoury and complex wine, sure to unfold well over several years. The 1999 tasted the day it was bottled, was 10 per cent barrel-fermented, which winemaker Michael Ivicevich says adds 'softness, colour and chocolate characters'. Reflecting the wetter autumn, it's slightly herbaceous, but also firm and concentrated, with deep blackcurrant and spice flavours, savoury and complex.

James Halliday (1998 Vintage) says
Medium to full red-purple; the bouquet offers a neat marriage between dark berry and chocolate fruit, with some savoury hints on the one hand and sweet oak on the other. A generous, ripe and harmonious palate, with dark berry and dark chocolate fruit flavours sustained by gently spicy oak.

Michael Cooper (1997 Vintage) says
The 1997 vintage is a mouthfilling Hawke's Bay red with a fresh peppermint/herbal bouquet and deep, bright colour. Matured in new and one-year-old French oak casks, it is sturdy and vibrantly fruity, with excellent depth of blackcurrant-like flavour gently seasoned with oak and finely balanced tannins. A well-structured wine for drinking now onwards.
