Deonte 'Estate 550' Coonawarra Merlot

Cracka Value Rating

Cracka Review

Relative newcomers to the wine scene, Deonte, certainly get top marks for their wonderful labels, especially the rather lovely Van Gogh-esk one that adorns this bottle of merlot. Furthermore, the contents are pretty spiffy too! Lots of red and blue fruits jump out of the glass to tackle the nostrils, along with some dark chocolate and savoury notes, plus a hint of mint and cedar. The palate is more medium-bodied and quite fruity, with a thread of dried herbs running along the tongue, some fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and a bit of lushness to the spiced chocolate finish. It's decent value and would be the bomb with some spicy Italian-style sausages and creamy mash.

Winemaker's Notes

Coonawarra's red soil called the “Terra Rossa” is possibly the most famous Australian terroir. A fruity and easy drinking merlot from the premium cool climate Coonawarra region. We added some Shiraz with the Merlot to complete its structure and ageing potential resulting in a medium bodied wine with deep colour.

Nose: Sweet red fruit aromas.

Palate: Lovely supple red fruit flavours with a fresh and juicy finish.

Alcohol: 14.0%

Grape Variety: 90% Merlot, 10% Shiraz.

Reviews and Accolades

Medium ruby colour. The nose displays notes of marzipan and sweet candy. Mulberry and red cherries, herbal notes (roast capsicum and olive brine and slight mintiness). There is a viscous texture that is contrasted by pronounced acidity. The herbal notes come out further on the palate. There are oak notes present in the form of milk chocolate. The chocolate and spicier herbal notes are representative of typical merlot. Medium length finish. There is a rich texture on the front palate with overt acid on the finish. This wine will benefit with age with a drinking window of 3 to 5 years.

Tasting: Aug 2014, there is a 10% Shiraz input, from a mild vintage, aromatic, juicy and medium bodied mulberry, blueberry and cherry with complex black olive, sage, seaweed and mint notes, glycerolly and brightly flavoured palate, vibrant citrussy acidity and a touch of dark chocolate, the Shiraz provides riper tannins than the traditional Cabernet input, seasoned French oak in the background.
