Deonte 'Estate 553' Coonawarra Merlot Cabernet Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Hailing from a very good year in Coonawarra comes this bright young thing that would go down well with a Moroccan-style lamb stew. Raspberries and cassis leap out of the glass to greet the nose, together with hints of vanilla, dried herbs and subtle spice. The palate is more medium-bodied and quite juicy fruity, with sweet, dark berry flavours, a slight grip to the talcy tannins, bright acidity and a decent finish. Give it a couple of years in the cellar to get the full benefit, or decant before sipping.

Winemaker's Notes

A luscious and elegant red blend from the premium cool climate Coonawarra region. Each of the three varietals for this wine were hand harvested from single vineyards located in the heart of Coonawarra producing high quality fruit from low yielding vines with elegantly intense flavours.

Nose: Bold dark fruit aromas.

Palate: A complex and harmonious mix of blackberry, blackcurrant and redcurrant flavours with a long juicy finish.

Alcohol: 14.3%

Grape Variety: 58% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Shiraz.

Reviews and Accolades

Deep ruby core. There is a significant oak signature on this wine. Aromas of crème brulée / vanilla work together with fruit notes of black jubey confectionary and black berry sherbet. The palate shows a step up in tannin quality and quantity from the 2012 Coonawarra Merlot. There are blueberry notes that are both stewed and raw. The oak is more integrated on the palate than on the nose. It comes through as a saw-dusty note on the palate. More structurally complete and balanced in weight. The tannins are broad and though it is drinkable now, the wine will benefit with food and bottle age.

Aug 2014, blend of 58% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Shiraz, blackberry essence and blueberry jube with some violet, sage, mint and white pepper notes, medium bodied with a juicy, glycerolly mid-palate, dusty tannins with mainly seasoned charry vanilla oak in the background.

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
A very different kettle of fish to the 550 Merlot; the colour is deeper and brighter, the palate filled with red and blackcurrant fruit, mouthwatering tannins providing structure for the fruit, the tannins not dry.
James Halliday Wine Companion. Date tasted: 5/3/2014.
