Devil's Lair Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot

Expert Reviews

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2007 Vintage) says
Devil's Lair is a large, sprawling vineyard ranging across hill and dale. It's just over 80 per cent cabernet sauvignon, and it was matured in oak for fifteen months. This comes from a great vintage but it didn't overly impress. It's a minty, earthy, dusty cabernet. It has excellent carry through the finish and it's flavoursome enough, but in general it lacks might and power spunk even. Not one of the stars of the vintage, especially given the price.

Devil's Lair is a large, sprawling vineyard that ranges across hills and dales. This tastes of blackcurrant, ash, chocolate and bay leaves, and there's no question that it has charm and smoothness. It also has quite a bit of green, unripe, twiggy character -Walsh reckons smelling it is like 'putting your nose into a bag of snowpeas and trellis-grown tomatoes'. It has good length, an aftertaste of black tea and a classic collection of fine-grained tannins. The coolness of the season is clear. We disagreed on this one at first but on re-tasting came to a consensus. Our rating moved downward through the process.

Devil's Lair is a large, sprawling vineyard that ranges across hills and dales. It's a beautiful sight, and is beautifully tended - all the vines are hand-pruned, the grapes then hand-picked. 200S RELEASE It takes a while to come up in the glass but it's a wine rich with gravelly, eucalypt-shot, curranty flavour, the spread of fruit and oak and tannin reaching right through your mouth - this is super satisfying stuff. There are also flavours of leather, pencils and malt, the aftertaste all gravelly, chocolaty yumminess. This wine delivers. DRINK 2013-2019.
