Cracka Review

Inspired by the wines of Bordeaux, Domain Day are giving merlot a serious go. There is plenty of compact black and red fruits at first sniff, then on the palate the dark, brooding fruit comes through again, coupled with a lick of savouriness, ripe, rounded, soft tannins, and a decent, dry finish. Would be awesome with a lamb casserole.

Winemaker's Notes

Colour: Rich purple in colour with dark crimson highlights.

Nose: Concentrated dark red berry fruits, (blackcurrant, blueberry, plum), with a hint of floral violet aroma.

Palate: The cool climate influence generates ripe dark berry fruit flavours and a savoury black olive character. The palate is generous and concentrated with intense ripe fruit characters of red berries and plums. As well as robust fruit flavours on the palate it finishes with a generous rounded tannin texture which will ensure its longevity.

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2007 Vintage) says
This is it! The fabled 'soft, smooth-hearted' merlot is harder to find than is commonly thought - but we've found one here. It's a lovely mouthful of juicy, berried, fleshy red wine. And, while it's more about fruit flavour than oak, there is still a kiss of toasty, vanillin American oak. What a smoothie . The funny thing is that it doesn't taste all that serious - it tastes more like plain good fun. Hunt down a decent price.

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
Has held its hue well; bottle maturation and the excellent vintage have combined to give admirable texture and structure to a wine with clear varietal expression and good length.

James Halliday (2003 Vintage) says
Olive, spice and cedar aromas; considerable depth and structure; fine but persistent tannins; be patient.
