Dutschke WillowBend Shiraz Cabernet Merlot

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Wayne Dutschke is one of those proud Barossa types who kind of fell into wine by accident but it was his grandfather who had the vision to plant a few grapes on the land in the 30s, which he described as a ‘Wonder of Creation.’ These wonders did not fully take fruition until the early 90s when the Dutschke’s got a bit more serious. This blend of Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot is the classic giving wine. It gives, and you take away a soft mouthfeel from the Merlot, a generosity from the Shiraz and structure from the Cabernet. Everyone’s a winner.

Winemaker's Notes

WillowBend is where it all started for us. Way back in 1990, Ken and I put our first red blend of Shiraz, Merlot, and Cabernet together and packaged it under what was then our WillowBend brand. In 1998 we changed the brand to "Dutschke" but WillowBend has continued on as our blended red wine.

Our idea has always been to produce a consistently full and flavoursome wine by blending the varieties that perform best on our St. Jakobi family vineyard, the property purchased by my grandfather Oscar Semmler in the 1930s.

The Shiraz (55%), Cabernet (35%) and Merlot (10%) come together to provide a round, soft, red berry fruit palate, with fine oak and fruit tannin support that allows the 2011 WillowBend to be enjoyed as a younger wine, but also has the structure needed for medium to long term cellaring.

After years in the bottle our older WillowBend blends have shown to develop complex characters while still maintaining their fresh fruit flavours. WillowBend is typically a great wine to drink now, but will also benefit further by lying it down for a few years.

We trust you'll enjoy it!

Tyson Stelzer (2011 Vintage) says
An enticing and impressive 2011 Barossa red, this is a vintage of soft, supple tannins, making for an earlier drinking WillowBend. Layers of spice, black plums and rhubarb and a lifted rose hip perfume define a spicy and vibrant style of lively red fruits, finely textured tannins and lingering fruit persistence.

At the bigger end of the WillowBend scale, packed with dense berry compote, black fruits, mixed spice, dark choc oak and firm tannins; a cut of vibrant acidity laces it all together, saving the day.

Perfumed violets, supple tannins and vibrant acidity give life to preserved plum and stewed rhubarb flavours, keeping rich alcohol in check.

A wine that is in a different idiom to the Dutschke shirazs, more willowy and lighter-bodied, with a mix of savoury red fruits.

There's much to love about this throaty Barossa blend, smelling ripe and juicy, with blackberry, cassis and savoury oak chocolate. The palate delivers plenty of flavour too, ripe black fruits and a heart of deep, rich earthy tannin. Astonishing quality and value.

An elegant, medium-bodied wine, the varietal components welded together; fine tannins and controlled oak.

An array of ripe but not jammy blackcurrant and cassis fruit; long palate, fine tannins.

A quite fragrant and distinctly elegant mix of small red fruits (predominantly) and a twist of spicy blackberry.

Shows the strength of the vintage; cassis and blackcurrant fruit, with fine, silky tannins.
