The 1997 vintage was grown at Gladstone, north of Martinborough in the Wairarapa, and fermented in French oak casks (50 per cent new), with half the final blend put through malolactic fermentation. When I found it disjointed in mid-1998, winemaker Jonathan McNab said it would benefit from aging - and he's right. Light yellow/green, it's a very generous and mouthfilling wine with a lovely depth of citrusy, mealy flavour and balanced acidity. A deliciously rich and harmonious wine, it should peak around 2000.
