Cracka Review

Our reserve Shiraz is sourced from vineyards in Marananga (56%), Greenock (25%) and Seppeltsfield (19%). Dense, earthy dark berry fruits, with hints of tobacco and cocoa are further enhanced by subtle use of oak. This wine has been matured in 35% new French oak hogsheads, and the balance in 3 and 4 year old French oak hogsheads for 20 months sur lie, resulting in a sexy, textured palate. And who’s 2%? Moscatel! A splash of funk that supports the base line fruit, and puts the ‘ph’ in fat.

Appearance: Dark plum.

Nose: Lifted black fruit aromas with a hints of earth and spice.

Palate: Rich, phat, earthy dark berry fruits, with hints of tobacco and cocoa, supported by a dense core of tannins.

Food: Oreos or offal.

Cellaring: Now or within 8 to 10 years.

Solid, bright colour; this is declassified The Cream and Fat of the Land that were not made in '07, and shows real integrity -and some very good black fruits and ripe tannins on the long, balanced palate. The label design and blurb is directed to the US market, and unlikely to win friends in Australia.

A blend of fruit from Seppeltsfield, Greenock and Ebenezer in a modern, classic Barossa Valley style. There are rich black fruits, some tarry notes and dark plum with licorice and some bright, exotic spices. Swarthy middle palate chew with impressive, smooth textural slide and lingering black fruit. The '2%' refers to a small addition of savagnin (formerly thought to be albarino).

Strong, spicy elements in both bouquet and palate; good mouthfeel, silky smooth; good wine; 2% Albarino

Showing a little reduction, but good fruit weight, and more obvious spice than the other wines; fleshy but less serious, and should be enjoyed while the others mature.

Matt Gant and John Retsas (both ex-St Hallett) are in the pink with their First Drop project; they're making great wine and having a good time doing it. This flagship shiraz gets a 2% addition of albarino, used in much the same fashion as viognier. It's a rich result, plenty of black fruit, tarry and concentrated, yet delivered with a polished smooth-honed texture. So approachable it'll have you in raptures!
