Fonty's Pool Shiraz

Cracka Review

This Shiraz is vibrant and shapely with cool-climate refined elegance. It is densely packed with juicy, precise fruit, a suggestion of spice, integrated oak and fine tannins. It is immediately accessible, but will reward further cellaring for 3 to 5 years.

Fonty's Pool Shiraz

Expert Reviews

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2008 Vintage) says
The wines of Fonty's Pool make a splash every now and then but in the riper, warmer vintages the wines are pretty reliable. It wasn't hard this year to find some decent wines from the stable. Ah, that's nice. Blackberry, toffee, a bit of mint chocolate, a shake of pepper and even a beefstock flavour. It's smooth and medium-bodied, sprightly and with good depth. Classy. Has a nutty niceness.

Ray Jordan (2008 Vintage) says
A lovely medium-weight shiraz delivering heaps of typical earthy and savoury ripe plumy fruit. It’s rich and deliciously supple on the palate with the tannins in good support and the oak nearly weighted. A wine for the short term and very drinkable.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Dense purple; inky black fruits on the bouquet lead into a full-bodied palate with layers of fruit and strong tannin; needs a decade

Peter Forrestal (2007 Vintage) says
There’s no question that the Great Southern (especially Frankland River and Mt Barker) produces some of the best cool-climate examples of the variety in Australia. Lush with dark-plum flavours and fleshy texture. Drinking beautifully.

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
Very cool-fruited bouquet, with blueberry, spice and a hint of dark plum; medium-bodied with noticeable perfume on the palate, and plentiful fine-grained tannins; surprisingly long.

James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
Vibrant, fresh red berry, spice and pepper aromas are repeated on the medium-bodied palate, with appropriately fine tannins and quality oak; enjoy while fresh.

Elegant and vibrant fruit aromas and flavours, with red cherry and raspberry at the core; fine tannins in a wonderfully fresh finish.

Light-bodied; spicy red fruits; pleasant, but lacks concentration.

James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
Potent licorice, black fruits and a dash of black pepper; plenty of weight and good tannin structure.

James Halliday (2001 Vintage) says
Medium to full red-purple; the bouquet is clean, with abundant dark berry, licorice, plum and spice fruit, the oak playing a support role; the palate has very good texture and mouthfeel, following convincingly on from the 2000 vintage. Makes generalisations about Manjimup hazardous.

James Halliday (2000 Vintage) says
Bright but deep red-purple; complex spice, leather, licorice and plum fruit on the bouquet, then a finely structured and distinguished palate, with dark plum fruit, spice, and fine, ripe tannins. A particularly elegant cool-climate style, with complexity to burn.
