Jeremy Oliver (2011 Vintage) says
Elegant and truly stylish, with some classy, savoury complexity. It's heady and spicy, with a peppery bouquet of cassis, blackberries, dark plums and fresh chocolate/mocha/vanilla oak backed by dusty and meaty influences. It's long and penetrative, with a searingly intense core of black and red fruit wrapped around smoky, chocolatey oak, a pliant, chalky spine and fresh acidity. Very honest and regional.

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Dense, opaque purple-crimson; this is, quite simply, the essence of McLaren Vale, its bouquet and full-bodied palate with multiple layers of blackberry and dark chocolate. This is the result of a barrel selection, and fully deserved its gold medal at the Melbourne Wine Show Í12.

James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
This wine is simply more of everything, with layers of sweet black fruits, mocha, fruitcake and lots of toasty oak; the palate is unctuous and leaves a heady trail of warm alcohol on the finish; pushing the ripeness envelope, but not quite overstepping the mark.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Ruby crimson; the bouquet is fragrant and complex with black fruits, spice and licorice, the medium- to full-bodied palate flush with generous and supple fruit; will be long-lived, and as it settles down, greater complexity will emerge.
Australian Wine Companion 2012 2011
James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Strong dark red colour; an elegant, medium-bodied wine that has good texture, flavour and structural balance; blackberry, dark chocolate, vanilla and spice flow into each other. Good outcome for the vintage.

By George, we think they've done it - produced another excellent reserve shiraz. It's on the up and up again. You can drink this anytime you like. It's got the same kind of fresh, immediate, fragrant appeal of a new car. It tastes of vanilla, spice, coffee and saturated plums, though at no stage does it overwhelm. It has long strings of tannin and tangy acidity, both of which should help it age well. Though as we've been wont to argue: How the hell are you supposed to keep your hands off it?

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
Deeply coloured, with an abundance of sweet black fruit, chocolate and fruitcake spice; the palate is rich, ripe and warm, with a layered array of dark fruit, and spicy oak on the finish

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2006 Vintage) says
This is a flag-bearer for the big, rich, smooth-hearted red wine style. Decadent wine, and fully satisfying too - important, given the price. It opens up with truffle and blackcurrant but, after a quick stretch of the legs, returns with dark chocolate, aniseed, blackberry and heavy, toasty, mocha oak - so it's worth decanting. It's a rich, saturated brute with a sumptuous mouthfeel, rolls of fine-grained tannin and excellent length. The goods.

James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
Medium- to full-bodied; well balanced and constructed with blackberry, licorice, dark chocolate and mocha oak; not overblown or extracted.

James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
Dark colour; opulent, rich and mouthfilling; chocolate, vanilla and mocha provide much of the energy, though there is plenty of blackberry/licorice fruit.

Jeremy Oliver (2004 Vintage) says
A luscious, long and stylish modern shiraz steeped in musky, spicy aromas of blackberries and plums, black pepper, cloves and cinnamon with an assertive but finely integrated background of smoky fine-grained vanilla oak. Its smooth and chocolatey palate of concentrated, briary fruit and spicy oak finishes with savoury, dark olive notes and minerals, plus a lingering core of black fruits.
Australian Wine Annual 2007 2006
Jeremy Oliver (2002 Vintage) says
Firm, long and very smooth shiraz that holds its 15% of alcohol with relative ease. Its peppery, spicy fragrance is a complex one, with briary blackberry, cassis and slightly meaty aromas of dark olives offset by sweet milk chocolate and vanilla oak very intense and assertive, its long, smooth palate of deep blackberry, redcurrant and dark plum flavours is bound by fine, yet firm tannins/There's some spirity warmth, plus a suggestion of tarry, spicy currant-like flavour. Long and complete, it finishes with just a hint of mint and menthol.

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2002 Vintage) says
Smooth blackberries, raisins and vanilla.
The Big Red Wine Book 2009/10 2009
James Halliday (2001 Vintage) says
Deep, bright purple-red; the smooth and luscious bouquet with blackberry and raspberry fruit supported by neatly judged oak is followed by a palate with excellent mouthfeel and balance; ripe blackberry and licorice flavours are accompanied by ripe tannins and more of the stylish oak of the bouquet.
Australian Wine Companion 2004
Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2001 Vintage) says
Deep, controlled, classy wine.

James Halliday (1996 Vintage) says
Strong red-purple; there is masses of powerful, earthy shiraz on the bouquet and a mix of mint, black cherry and earthy varietal fruit on the palate, supported by strong tannins. The oak influence is subtle.
