Michael Cooper (2001 Vintage) says
Fromm's top Chardonnay, grown on clay soils in the Clayvin Vineyard, on the southern flanks of the Wairau Valley, was previously labelled Reserve, but from the 2001 vintage is called Clayvin Vineyard. The 2000 vintage is a wine of real individuality, and so is the 2001 Fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (none new), it took two years to go through a full malolactic fermentation. The clay soils, says winemaker Hatsch Kalberer, give 'a less fruity, more minerally and tighter character'. The bouquet is mealy, the palate powerful (14.5 per cent alcohol), rich and savoury, with great complexity and a long, bone-dry but not austere finish. Worth tracking down.
