A pet variety on the sideline,' is Marlborough winemaker Hatsch Kalberer's description of Gewurztrarniner, which occupies a tiny, 0.1-hectare plot in the estate vineyard. The bone-dry 2004 vintage is powerful and robust (14.5 per cent alcohol), with highly concentrated flavours of lychees and spice, although the total absence of sweetness exposes a bit of Gewurztraminer's characteristic phenolic hardness.

A pet variety on the sideline,' is winemaker Hatsch Kalberer's description of Gewurztraminer, which occupies a tiny, 0.1-hectare plot in the estate vineyard. The 2002 vintage is richly perfumed, with loads of spicy, gingery flavour, in a leaner, much drier style than most of Marlborough's top examples of the grape.
