Galli Estate Il Acquario Shiraz Grenache Viognier

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

You’ve heard of a GSM but how about an SGV? This curious blend sees Shiraz harmonise with Grenache and Viognier to make a barbecue red that will get you salivating after the first sip. This has got it all, black fruits, florals and licorice aromas before a joyous palate of rich fruit and savoury notes. This is a celebration wine to be matched with Med-inspired food that would benefit from the wines bright acidity and supple tannins.

Winemaker's Notes

This Il Acquario wine is at last back on our list again. It was last produced from the vintage of 2006, and is only made in years where quality is at its best. The 2009 blend is unique and rare. In the 2006 blend we used Grenache, which has now been replaced by Tempranillo. To the future this could change again, as the Il Acquario is a wine that best represents the vintage and to which varieties best perform and offcourse best blend together. This wine is also a first for us, as it has not been fined and has not been filtered. It therefore shows its true colours of Heathcote and the 2009 vintage.

Very aromatic, expressing blackberries, liquorice, hints of spice and black pepper, with a floral undertone. The palate exhibits rich fruit and dark berries, the tannins are fine and well rounded. There’s an earthy/savoury underlying aspect from the Tempranillo, nice tight acidity and a great length and balance that will age well.

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
The unusual blend works well to produce a lively, light- to medium-bodied red with good length and minimal tannins; ready now.
