Gemtree Vineyards Obsidian Shiraz

Winemaker's Notes

Appearance: Majenta black.

Nose: Dark cherry, Satsuma plums, currants, dark chocolate, liquorice, marshmallow and creamy vanillin oak.

Palate: A multi-dimensional, powerful wine that displays a diverse spectrum of flavours. The front palate is rich and generous, dominated by dark fruits while the mid to back palate explodes with mulberry and raspberry conserve. The entire palate is perfectly balanced from start to finish and shows great poise and elegance with soft, velvety tannins. For a young wine this vintage has remarkable presence.

Food: Eye fillet steak.

Cellaring: Now - 2030

Alcohol: 14%

Winemaking: We commenced our reserve program 11 years ago and I believe Obsidian 2012 showcases everything a reserve wine should. Great vintages and great vineyards speak volumes given the latitude, and the 2012 Obsidian has thus far exceeded our expectations. Matured in only new French oak for 3 years, 2012 deserves the title of Gemtree’s flagship wine - dark and powerful, yet restrained and poised.

Gemtree Vineyards Obsidian Shiraz

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Only 1% of the total Gemtree shiraz intake makes into Obsidian, and then it spends three years in new French oak. The hue is remarkable, still crimson-purple, and the wine is crammed full of flavour, blackberry fruit with its McLaren Vale signature of dark chocolate, and -of course - French oak.

The top one percent of shiraz from one of McLaren Vale's top growers. This wine is an essay in the regions strengths with black and red cherry fruIt silky tannins and generous ripe texture kept tidy here by a firm tannin finish.

Powerful, full-bodied McLaren Vale style from start to finish, but an impressive one; blackberry fruit and dark chocolate influences have provided the foundation for three years in French oak

Deep, dense colour; an excellent portrait of McLaren Vale shiraz at its bounteous best, flush with blackberry, plum and dark chocolate fruit plus velvety smooth tannins. Only 1% of Gemtree shiraz makes Obsidian.

Deep, purple colour; very complex aromas and flavours; slurpy blackberry, licorice, dark chocolate, spice and herb flavours, mouthfilling and long; has eaten the French oak in which it spent 30 months.
