Geoff Merrill Botham Merrill Willis Cabernet Sauvignon

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Take two wine-loving English test cricketers from the late 70s/80s, and add to one cricket-loving wine tragic. Then add ripe Cabernet grapes and some rich oak. What do you get? This powerful and full-flavoured South Australian red, which looks decadent and delicious, the style wonderfully generous and with boatloads of rich flavour. Subtlety you won't find here, but hearty flavours (and plenty of cricket references) abound!

Winemaker's Notes

Ian Botham and Bob Willis are two of the biggest names in the modern era of world cricket. Geoff Merrill's reputation on the international wine stage is equally impressive. A mutual passion for their respective professions, cricket and wine, drew them together during the English tour of Australia in 1978. Since then a lasting friendship has developed over many bottles opened and balls bowled. Winemaker Geoff Merrill has an enviable record as a winemaker and show judge spanning some 25 years in Australia, South Africa, The United Kingdom, Italy, USA and New Zealand. His food friendly wines have a large following particularly in the UK where he has visited regularly over the years.

Heat wave conditions again caused heart palpitations amongst Winemakers and Viticulturists alike, leading up to the 2009 harvest. Luckily as quickly as the heat came, it died down to a more manageable level and most vines made a full recovery to ripen in a slow and steady manner. 2009 produced many good parcels of fruit and some absolutely outstanding wines were made.

The colour is very dark red with hints of crimson with intense varietal aromas apparent with this blend of McLaren Vale and Coonawarra bringing out the best in this Cabernet showing, violets, leather, black olive, leafy menthol and a touch of chocolate. The palate is fresh and tight with firm tannins, well balanced acid and a long finish.
