Geoff Merrill Cilento Sangiovese

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Does Sangiovese work in the McLaren Vale, it does when it’s made properly by one of the biggest names in the business, Geoff Merrill. Alternative varieties like this are leading the charge as consumers are searching for more savoury styles to pair with food. This wine reveals a fair bit of complexity and would go well with pizza or pasta where it would harmonise with the mint, olive, prune and dark chocolate aromas and flavours. The palate is all about the acid and tannin structure, ensuring a moreish wine that you’ll want to return to.

Winemaker's Notes

This Sangiovese is a complex wine which is both earthy and savoury prominently displaying black cherry and plum with hints of leather and fine dusty tannins.

The 2010 season got off to a shaky start with a brief burst of heat in November 2009, which adversely affected flowering in some varieties. Good preceding winter and spring rains set up the vines with good soil moisture and ample canopy so most varieties came through summer unaffected. For the remainder of the growing season the climate was ideal for premium grape production with many local growers proclaiming 2010 a stand-out vintage in McLaren Vale.
Alcohol: 14.5%.
