Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

We love a full throttle McLaren Vale Shiraz at Cracka and one of the godfathers of the Vale is the moustachioed maestro Geoff Merrill. This is what the Vale is all about, regional aromas of red berries, licorice, leather and spice. The palate is ripe and generous, warm and seductive with a touch of oak before soft tannins fill out the finish. It will cellar well if you have the will power, if not, it will enjoy being served with hearty meat dishes.

Winemaker's Notes

The colour is very dark red with hints of crimson with intense varietal aromas apparent with this blend of McLaren Vale and Coonawarra bringing out the best in this Cabernet showing, violets, leather, black olive, leafy menthol and a touch of chocolate. The palate is fresh and tight with firm tannins, well balanced acid and a long finish.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Deep garnet; the perfume is full of succulent sweet red fruits with loganberry conserve, mocha and a light floral note; the medium-bodied palate is juicy and generous, fresh and lively, with ample fine tannins on the finish; an elegant McLaren Vale shiraz by anyone's measure.

Retains good hue and clarity; pleasantly balanced and flavoured wine, with red and black fruits, restrained oak and soft tannins.

Biscuity aromas layered with dark fruit. Well-weighted palate, ripe and tannic, with plenty of varietal fruit flavours. Drying finish.

Black fruits, earth, licorice, pepper and dark chocolate coalesce on both bouquet and the medium-bodied palate; good length, with a slightly savoury bite on the finish.

Geoff Merrill knows how to handle McLaren Vale shiraz - witness his 'Henley' Shiraz and Jimmy Watson Trophy win with his 2004 'Reserve' Shiraz. Here's what he can do with a four-year-old shiraz at a more user-friendly price point. This has attractive brambly oak, concentrated redcurrant and dark plum flavours with some tarry notes, thick viscous texture and moderate balanced tannins.

Clean, fresh, cherry fruit and sweet oak on the bouquet are logically followed by more cherry fruit and soft, fine tannins; American oak is present throughout but is well integrated and balanced.

James Halliday (1996 Vintage) says
Medium red-purple; a clean, fresh red cherry/berry bouquet leads into a palate with more weight and complexity than the usual Merrill style, quite ripe and rich, with flavours of chocolate and cherry.

James Halliday (1994 Vintage) says
Medium red-purple; quite fragrant (as the cold fermentation would suggest), clean and fresh; a marked lemon and vanilla oak influence is also immediately apparent. A well-made, elegant wine on the palate, with fresh berry fruit and nicely balanced oak.
