Geoff Merrill Reserve Shiraz

Tyson Stelzer (2010 Vintage) says
This is a sumptuous and succulent McLaren Vale shiraz that presents an enticing offering of immaculate black fruits. The bouquet sings of black plums, juicy blackberries and a lift of perfumed violets, throwing to a gorgeously fruit-focused palate that lingers long and supple, supported by soft, fine-grained tannins. It seems the days of Geoff Merrill's firm oak stamp are over. Welcome to a brand new day!

This succulent and sumptuous offering sings with perfumed violets, black plums and juicy blackberries that linger long and supple through an impressively fruit-focused palate, propelled by soft, fine-grained tannins.

Healthy colour; a strict barrel selection after 12 months is returned to barrel for another 10 months, so it is inevitable that both the texture and flavour of the wine are oak-influenced. That said, the fruit flavours have distinct elegance, and carry through to the finish of a wine with a very individual message.

Campbell Mattinson (2005 Vintage) says
A couple of aged reds from Geoff Merrill made for a welcome change of pace at the tasting bench; excellent to taste wines at maturity. This one too is made from the “best 100 barrels” of the vintage and is matured for 28 months in French oak.
This is in excellent shape. The oak is still assertive but not in a crass way; it adds cedary, smoky, chocolatey flavour to rich notes of plum and leather and earth. There are developed chewed-tobacco flavours too and welcome ripples of tannin. It’s not mind-blowing but it offers above average, aged red drinking.

Jeremy Oliver (2005 Vintage) says
Gentle and earthy, deeply fruited and elegant, this rather squeaky, polished shiraz opens with a rustic, earthy and leathery bouquet whose restrained dark berry aromas and walnut/vanilla oak are backed by a wild, barnyard aspect. With aeration, its smooth, elegant and sweetly fruited palate marries intense flavours of dark berries and plums with polished chocolate/cedar oak and fine, pliant tannin.
The Australian Wine Annual
James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
A clean, elegant, medium-bodied wine; supple red and black fruits with a touch of regional chocolate, and fine tannins; 23 months in French and American oak, which still intrudes a little. Winner Jimmy Watson '06.
Australian Wine Companion 2008 2007
James Halliday (2003 Vintage) says
Medium-bodied, sweet, ripe cassis/confit fruit flavours, the oak woven through seamlessly; just a little sweet overall; 33 months in oak.

James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
The most focused and intense of the 4 Shirazs, with lovely black fruits, touches of licorice, spice and bitter chocolate; long finish; carries its high alcohol well; 30 months in oak. Trophy Great Australian Shiraz Challenge '06.
Australian Wine Companion 2008 2007
Jeremy Oliver (2002 Vintage) says
A long, smooth and rustic shiraz whose ripe, slightly tarry expression of dark plum, cassis and blackberry fruit is matched with sweet vanilla/chocolate American oak and backed by spicy, dove-like nuances. Underpinned by moderately firm, drying tannin, it's long and complete, with generous, sour-edged flavours and meaty, polished leather-like undertones backed by assertive nuances of 70% cocoa dark chocolate. It handles its 15.5% alcohol pretty well.
Australian Wine Annual 2009 2008
James Halliday (2001 Vintage) says
An attractive, medium-bodied wine, with a complex amalgam of black fruits, dark chocolate, spice and earth; the oak is well-integrated; 34 months in French and American oak.
Australian Wine Companion 2008 2007
James Halliday (2000 Vintage) says
A medium-bodied, harmonious and seamless blend of black fruits, dark chocolate, mocha/vanilla and tannins; basically to roll now, like a Rioja. Brilliant outcome for such a vintage.
Australian Wine Companion 2007 2006
James Halliday (1999 Vintage) says
Savoury, spicy black fruit aromas and flavours with a touch of regional dark chocolate; light- to medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a lingering finish.
Australian Wine Companion 2007 2006
Jeremy Oliver (1998 Vintage) says
Well constructed, flavoursome shiraz whose aromas of cassis, blackberries and plums are slightly subdued by assertive vanilla oak. Velvet smooth, generous and spicy, its uncomplicated palate of sweet ripe blackberry fruit and smoky vanilla oak is framed by surprisingly firm tannins. Has good future.
Australian Wine Annual 2005 2004
James Halliday (1998 Vintage) says
Savoury bottle-developed aromas; complex, multi-layered dark fruits, chocolate and oak flavours; soft ripe tannins. Good balance and length.
Australian Wine Companion 2005 2004
James Halliday (1994 Vintage) says
Medium to full red-purple; the bouquet is redolent of ripe, dark cherry and liquorice-accented fruit of medium to full intensity. The palate delivers all of the promise of the bouquet with abundant dark cherry and plum fruit supported by soft tannins. Well-handled oak; good structure and weight, and - notwithstanding all this flavour - keeps the core of elegance of the Merrill style.
